Create cherished memories in Donegal

THE hardships of a trip to Donegal for many are what left the strongest memories. Talk of cattle boats and drawing water from wells, of sleeping on kitchen tables and handling farm animals for the first time are among the experiences often talked about by the older visitors who made their trips in the middle of the last century.

For those who have been travelling more recently, the links with family—close and distant—are very much to the fore, but activities, events and experiences beyond a summer in the fields are what characterise the summer jaunts to Donegal today. And, of course, Donegal tourism has developed to become an attraction not only to those without family links to Donegal, but also those who had never even heard of Errigal until the notion of a trip to Ireland’s rugged and breathtaking north-west popped into their head. It has led to the development of an infrastructure which would only have been dreamed of by previous visitors, and has offered new opportunities for local people.

A beacon for the diaspora

Among this development of the tourism industry was the Gallen family, with Tommy, Bridget and their children building their business as hoteliers on a truly Donegal type of hospitality.

Understanding the importance of a warm welcome and bit of craic, their first guest house’s popularity led to the launch of their first hotel, Vila Rose Hotel and Spa in Ballybofey. A second site in Ballybofey—Jackson’s—followed, before the realisations of a dream came with An Chúirt.

The third Gallen hotel, in the shadow of Errigal in the heart of the Gaeltacht, opened a new world to the family, who have seen the strength of the connection which those families who cast out across the world still feel for Donegal.

“Nestled beneath the majestic Errigal mountain and along the serene Clady River, An Chúirt Hotel and Health Club in Gweedore offers more than picturesque views—it embodies a heartfelt connection for Scotland’s Donegal diaspora,” Emma Herron, the group’s Marketing Manager told The Irish Voice. “For generations, families from Donegal have journeyed Scotland, particularly to Glasgow and its surrounding towns, weaving a rich tapestry of culture and community. Today, An Chúirt stands as a beacon for those seeking to reconnect with their roots.

“In recent years, An Chúirt has seen a notable increase in couples from Glasgow choosing the hotel as their wedding venue. The attraction lies not only in the hotel's stunning surroundings but also in its ability to provide a meaningful connection to their heritage. Our wedding packages, including options for civil and humanist ceremonies, and a dedicated wedding team, means An Chúirt ensures each celebration is tailored to the couple's vision.”

Warm welcome

The hotel’s warm hospitality and authentic Gaeltacht charm provide a comforting embrace for returning visitors. Guests can indulge in locally sourced cuisine at Fara Óg’s Bar or The Duck Restaurant, enjoying dishes that echo the flavours of Donegal.

The surrounding landscapes—golden beaches, tranquil lakes, and the iconic Bád Eddie shipwreck—offer a nostalgic journey through cherished memories, bringing to life the call from home felt by so many generations of Donegal people across the sea.

With direct Loganair flights from Glasgow to Donegal, and bus services such as that offered by McGinley's Coach Travel from Glasgow to Donegal—a much loved service which has served travellers for some 50 years—the journey back has never been more accessible. An Chúirt Hotel not only offers a luxurious retreat but also serves as a bridge between past and present, inviting the diaspora to rediscover their heritage and create new memories amidst familiar landscapes.

“At An Chúirt Hotel, we extend a heartfelt céad míle fáilte to our friends from Scotland,” Emma Herron said. “Nestled beneath the majestic Mount Errigal and along the serene Clady River, our hotel offers a unique blend of authentic Gaeltacht charm and modern comfort. Whether you're returning to reconnect with your Donegal roots or discovering the beauty of Gweedore for the first time, we invite you to create cherished memories with us.”
