Savour a pie and pint in Sharkeys

SHARKEYS BAR

51 Old Rutherglen Rd, Gorbals, Glasgow, G5 9DT

0141 429 3944

IN THE heart of the Gorbals, if you look closely, you will find one the best kept secret hostelries in Glasgow.

A 10-minute walk from the city centre takes you to one of the remaining Donegal pubs and one of the two that are in the arches which nestle in the Gorbals itself, and you just know before you enter that you are about to be welcomed in the same way would be if you were in Gweedore or Dunfanaghy.

At any time of any day, you will find some punters in the pub who will be happy to be described as ‘in with the bricks’ or even described as locals, and no shortage of friendly faces there too. If a couple of pints on the way to the game is what you are after then Sharkeys is tailor-made for you, but equally if you are after a wee session with your paper and yourself alone for company, then it’s also an ideal spot.

Another major plus point for this bar is the choice of meals that are on offer all day, every day and all cooked fresh on the premises in a kitchen that you can see from your chosen perch in the pub. This Pub Spy has noted the steak pie in Sharkeys is

absolutely in the top five in Glasgow.

The pub encapsulates the very word ‘traditional’ and you can imagine its days gone by when the doors would have been greeted with an early chap for a breakfast pint!

However, two other things that stand out in this fine establishment, in no particular order, are the fact that wine is offered in small bottles—in all colours—and the saviour of salvation itself, is that they have cans of Club Orange, served cold from the fridge.

Speaking of service, you will be attended to quickly by the staff who are friendly and happy to chat away to their regulars and visitors alike. If you are of the stout loving fraternity, you will find the ‘out of five meter’ racing towards 4.8 on the scale. If you prefer another pint or a bottle, then you have a whole load to choose from and you won’t be disappointed.

Whether you are passing through, out for the day or just starting your night, go to Sharkeys, take some pals with you and savour one of the most admirable arches in town.
